Anmok is where Gangneung's reputation as Korea's coffee city began. In the 1980s, rows of coffee vending machines along the Anmok breakwater became a famous date spot nicknamed 'vending machine street,' and from the 1990s master roasters began moving in with their machines, shaping today's cafe strip. The fun part: those original vending machines still stand by the beach — doing a side-by-side tasting of a specialty pour-over and a few-hundred-won machine coffee is a ritual unique to Anmok.
The street itself is refreshingly simple: cafes strung in a line along Anmok Beach, most built as two- or three-story glass boxes, so whichever one you pick, the sea hangs dead center in the window. Many roast their own beans on site, giving each house a distinct flavor identity. If you're serious about coffee, choose a place that serves hand drip and ask about the beans — Gangneung cafe owners famously cannot stop talking once coffee comes up. Street snacks like coffee-bean-shaped pastries add to the fun between cups.
If you can pick your timing, aim for two windows. First, sunrise — this is the east coast, so watching the sun climb out of the sea with a warm cup in hand is a genuine luxury (winter sunrises are the crispest). Second, October, when the Gangneung Coffee Festival — running since 2009 as Korea's flagship coffee event — fills the Anmok area with tastings, hand-drip workshops and barista competitions. Book accommodation early during the festival; rooms disappear fast.
Getting here is easy: about 20 minutes by bus or 10 by taxi from Gangneung Station (KTX), with city buses stopping right at the Anmok Coffee Street stop. From Seoul the KTX takes just over two hours, so a day trip is perfectly realistic. Driving is the one weak point — parking near the strip falls far short of demand and weekends turn into a parking battle, so public transport is the saner choice. After your cup, stroll the adjacent Gangneung Harbor, or fold Anmok into a half-day loop with Gyeongpo Beach and Jungang Market — that's the classic Gangneung formula.
