Cheonjiyeon Falls

Among all of Jeju's waterfalls, this is practically the only one you can see at night — it stays open until 10 PM with landscape lighting. Illuminated Cheonjiyeon feels completely different from its daytime self, perfect for an evening stroll if you're staying in Seogwipo. The 22-meter cascade drops into a deep pond, and the name literally means 'pond where heaven meets earth.' The flat walkway through subtropical forest works for strollers and grandparents alike, and at 2,000 won admission it's a bargain.

How's this place?

Cheonjiyeon Falls is the waterfall you can actually walk to from downtown Seogwipo. A 22-meter-high, 12-meter-wide curtain of water drops into a pond about 20 meters deep, and the name — 'the pond where heaven and earth meet' — captures the mood the roaring water and dense forest create together. The cliff terrain carved out of Jeju's volcanic geology means the walk in feels like passing through a gorge, not just approaching a viewpoint.

From the ticket booth it's a roughly one-kilometer round-trip walkway, almost entirely flat — fine for strollers and elderly parents alike. The forest flanking the path is a protected subtropical woodland, and the valley is famous as a habitat of the marbled eel, a tropical species, plus a native colony of Elaeocarpus trees — read the info panels as you go and the waterfall visit doubles as a nature walk. One heads-up: the photo spot in front of the falls catches drifting spray, so wipe your lens between shots.

What really sets this waterfall apart is the night opening. While most Jeju waterfalls close access at sunset, Cheonjiyeon has landscape lighting and stays open until 10 PM (ticket sales end at 9:20 PM). The lighting was recently overhauled, reportedly making the illuminated walkway, falls, and forest look better than ever. It slots perfectly into an itinerary as a post-dinner night stroll — a rare after-dark attraction on the island.

Admission is 2,000 won for adults and 1,000 won for children and teens; kids under 6, seniors 65-plus, and visitors with disabilities enter free with ID. It's five minutes by car from Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market and sits right by Seogwipo Port and Saeyeongyo Bridge — the classic car-free itinerary is grabbing dinner at the market, walking the falls under the lights, then continuing to the illuminated bridge. An hour or so covers the visit, free cultural guide services can be booked at the tourist information center by the ticket office, and note that pets aren't allowed.
