Bukchon Hanok Village

A Joseon-era hanok neighborhood on the hill between Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung. Famous for its tiled-roof alleys ('Bukchon's 8 views') — but people live here, so explore quietly.

How's this place?

Bukchon Hanok Village is a traditional residential quarter on the hill between Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, and Jongmyo — home to royalty and high officials in the Joseon era. Over 600 hanok still stand densely here, preserving old-alley scenery in central Seoul.

Its most famous spot is the sloped alley around Gahoe-dong 11. Climbing the hill and looking back, you'll see tiled hanok roofs layered against Namsan Tower — one of the city's iconic photo scenes. Eight such vantage points are known as 'Bukchon's 8 views.'

But this is a living neighborhood before it is an attraction. Keep noise down in the early morning and late evening, and don't peek into or enter homes uninvited. It pairs nicely on foot with the Samcheong-dong cafe street and Insa-dong nearby.

Visitor tips

  • Enter on foot from Exit 2, Anguk Station (Line 3).
  • A residential area — stay quiet, don't enter private property.
  • The Gahoe-dong slope frames hanok + Namsan Tower.
  • Walkable with Samcheong-dong and Insa-dong.
