Gamcheon Culture Village rose on a steep hillside in Busan's Saha-gu, built up by Korean War refugees and members of the Taegukdo faith. Houses cluster in tight terraces down the slope, their roof heights aligned so no home blocks the view behind it — a distinctive layout.
Since 2009, an urban-regeneration project has seen artists and residents paint murals and turn empty houses into galleries and studios, making it one of Busan's signature cultural attractions. The blanket of colorful pastel homes earned it nicknames like 'Korea's Machu Picchu' and 'Busan's Santorini.'
Half the fun is hunting for murals and sculptures through the lanes. The 'Little Prince and the Fox' statue overlooking the village is the most popular photo spot, sometimes with a queue. It's still a lived-in community, so keep quiet in the alleys and respect private property.
