What this tool does
The tile calculator outputs tile count, adhesive (kg), and grout (kg) in one step from installation area, tile size, grout joint width, and waste factor. The core formula computes each tile's footprint including the grout joint — (tile width + grout) × (tile height + grout) — then divides the waste-adjusted area by that footprint. Adhesive is fixed at 4kg/m². Grout consumption uses an empirical formula scaled by tile size and joint width.

Real examples
Example 1: Bathroom floor 300×300mm (4㎡, 2mm grout)
Footprint = 0.302 × 0.302 = 0.09120㎡. Adjusted area = 4 × 1.10 = 4.4㎡. Count = ceil(4.4 ÷ 0.09120) = 49 tiles. Adhesive = 4 × 4 = 16kg. Grout ≈ 4 × 0.043 = 0.17kg.
Example 2: Living room floor 600×600mm (30㎡, 2mm grout)
Footprint = 0.602 × 0.602 = 0.36240㎡. Count = ceil(33 ÷ 0.36240) = 92 tiles. Adhesive = 30 × 4 = 120kg. Grout ≈ 30 × 0.021 = 0.64kg — large tiles consume very little grout.
Example 3: Kitchen mosaic backsplash 100×100mm (3㎡, 3mm grout)
Footprint = 0.103 × 0.103 = 0.01061㎡. Count = ceil(3.3 ÷ 0.01061) = 312 tiles. Adhesive 12kg. Grout ≈ 3 × 0.192 = 0.58kg — small tiles consume comparatively more grout.
Frequently asked questions
How do I choose a grout joint width?
Porcelain tiles (bathroom wall/floor) typically use 2mm joints. Ceramic and outdoor tiles use 3-5mm. Large-format tiles (600mm+) laid diagonally benefit from 3mm or wider for levelling. Narrower joints require more precise tile manufacturing tolerances.
Is 10% waste enough?
Yes for rectangular rooms with straight-lay installation. Use 15-20% for diagonal (45°) installation, 15% for irregular bathroom shapes, and up to 20% for small mosaic tiles with heavy field cutting.
What does the 4kg/m² adhesive rate assume?
It is the average for ceramic/porcelain tile adhesive based on KS L 1001 tile installation practice. Thick tiles (10mm+) or exterior installation may need 5kg/m²; thin interior tiles may use 3kg/m². The calculator uses 4kg/m² as the mid-range value.
Is grout the same as cement grout?
Grout (joint filler) comes in cementitious and epoxy types. Wet areas like bathrooms and kitchens benefit from epoxy grout for water resistance. This calculator's grout kg estimate is based on cementitious grout density.
How are cut tiles at room edges handled?
The waste factor includes edge-cut loss. For large tiles, edge cuts can represent a significant proportion of total tile area, which is why a higher waste factor matters more with large-format tiles.
Can I calculate rectangular tiles (e.g. 300×600mm)?
Yes — enter width 300mm and height 600mm separately. The calculator handles non-square tiles using the full footprint formula.
