How to Use (3 Steps)

Worked Examples

Example 1: Exterior wall sheathing, 4 walls (12 m × 3 m = 36 m²)

Area 36 m², 10% waste → adjusted 39.6 m². Sheets = ceil(39.6 ÷ 2.9768) = 14. Total weight: 14 × 33 = 462 kg. Nails: ≈ 59 per sheet × 14 = 826 nails. Order 900 nails (2 boxes of 500).

Example 2: Subfloor over floor joists (6 m × 8 m = 48 m²)

Area 48 m², 10% waste → 52.8 m². Sheets = ceil(52.8 ÷ 2.9768) = 18 sheets. Weight: 594 kg. For a second-floor installation, factor this load into the floor joist design. Joist spacing of 400 mm increases stiffness versus 600 mm.

Example 3: Sloped roof deck (slope-adjusted area 25 m²)

Roof slope must be converted to actual surface area before entering. At 30° slope, actual = plan area ÷ cos(30°) ≈ plan × 1.155. Enter actual 25 m², 15% waste (complex cuts) → 28.75 m². Sheets = ceil(28.75 ÷ 2.9768) = 10. Weight: 330 kg. Use structural-grade plywood (KS F 3113) for roof decking.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the sheet listed as 1,220 × 2,440 mm when 4×8 ft should be 1,219 × 2,438 mm?

Nominally, 4 ft × 8 ft = 1,219.2 mm × 2,438.4 mm, but Korean distribution rounds this to 1,220 × 2,440 mm (sometimes sold as '4×8 자' referencing the Shaku unit). This tool uses the actual Korean market size of 1,220 × 2,440 mm = 2.9768 m² per sheet.

When should I use 12 mm vs 18 mm plywood?

This page is for 18 mm only. For 12 mm, use the Plywood 12 mm Calculator. General guidelines: exterior wall sheathing 12–18 mm, subfloor 18–24 mm, roof deck 12–18 mm. Canada Wood Korea and NDS-based practice recommend 18 mm or thicker for structural sheathing on 600 mm stud spacing.

How should I handle window and door openings?

Option 1 (precise): subtract opening area from total, then use 10–15% waste. Option 2 (practical): leave openings in and use a lower 5–8% waste factor, since cut-off pieces from openings are often reused elsewhere on site. Option 2 is more common in practice.

What is the nail spacing based on?

IRC R602.3 (International Residential Code, structural sheathing fastening schedule): 6-inch (150 mm) edge spacing and 12-inch (300 mm) field spacing, assuming 600 mm stud spacing. Apply KDS 41 33 02 or your structural drawings if they specify different spacing.

What is the difference between structural and non-structural plywood?

Structural plywood (KS F 3113) has tighter veneer defect limits and a waterproof adhesive bond meeting interior exposure standards. Use it for load-bearing sheathing, subfloors, and roof decking. Non-structural plywood is for cabinetry, non-load-bearing partitions, and furniture where moisture and load demands are low.
